Rwanda’s Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) manages visas, permits and residence. Many applications are made online through Irembo.
This guide is an orientation only. It does not list fees or eligibility rules, so always check the official DGIE pages for your nationality and purpose.

Kigali has a growing services, technology and conference sector. Applications for many immigration services are made online through Irembo, the government's e-services portal, so be wary of anyone charging to "guarantee" a permit.
Study opportunities
The Higher Education Council (HEC) accredits higher education institutions in Rwanda. Check that your chosen institution and programme are accredited before you apply.

Important requirements
Commonly requested across many visa types. The official document list for your specific visa always takes priority.
- A valid passport. Many countries require it to remain valid for a minimum period beyond your stay; check the exact rule for your visa.
- A completed application submitted through the official government portal or an authorised visa application centre.
- Evidence of the purpose of your stay, such as an offer letter, letter of admission, invitation or itinerary.
- Proof that you can support yourself financially, usually through bank statements, sponsorship letters or scholarship letters.
- Biometrics (fingerprints and photo), medical examinations or police certificates may be requested for some visa types.
- Payment of the official government fee. Fees are published on the official website and can change.

Life in Rwanda
Kigali is known for being clean and well organised. English, French and Kinyarwanda are all used in public life. Newcomers often mention the hilly geography, the use of motorbike taxis and mobile money as everyday adjustments.
