Choosing a university abroad: questions to ask before you apply
Accreditation, total costs, visa eligibility and graduate outcomes. A clear framework for comparing international universities.

Rankings are only one part of the picture. The right university for you depends on your goals, your budget and the rules of the country you want to study in.
1. Is the institution recognised, and can it host international students?
Many countries require institutions to be approved before they can sponsor student visas. For example, the UK uses licensed student sponsors and Canada uses designated learning institutions. Check this on the official government website before you pay any deposit.
2. What will it really cost?
Tuition is only part of it. Add accommodation, living costs, health insurance, visa fees, travel and any amount you must show as proof of funds. Get every figure from the university or official government source, with a date.
3. What support is available?
Look for international student offices, accommodation help, academic support, mental-health services and career services. These make a big difference in your first year.
4. What happens after graduation?
Some countries offer post-study work options; conditions vary and can change. Look at graduate outcomes published by the university, and read the official rules for post-study work in that country.
5. Does the programme fit your goals?
Read the module list, teaching style, placement or internship opportunities, and whether the qualification is recognised in the country where you want to work later.
Use official, free advice
Several governments run free advisory services for international students, such as EducationUSA, DAAD and EduCanada. Use them before paying any private agent.
