Understanding healthcare systems before you move
Public, insurance-based and mixed systems: what to research before you arrive so you are covered from day one.

Healthcare works very differently from country to country, and visa conditions sometimes include specific health insurance requirements. Researching early prevents unpleasant surprises.
Three broad models
- Publicly funded systems, where residents access care through a national or regional health service. Newcomers may need to register, and some visas involve a health charge.
- Insurance-based systems, where health insurance (public, private or employer-provided) is required to access care.
- Mixed systems, combining public provision with private insurance for faster or additional services.
Questions to research for your destination
- Does my visa require a specific type or level of health insurance?
- When does coverage start, and am I covered from my arrival date?
- How do I register with a doctor or clinic?
- What does emergency care cost, and what number do I call?
- Are prescriptions, dental care and mental-health services included?
Before you travel
Bring copies of medical records and prescriptions (translated if needed), check whether your medication is legal in your destination, and check official travel health advice about recommended vaccinations.
Always rely on official government health and immigration websites for the rules that apply to you.
